It’s important to choose the right drum set for your budget. Not forgetting the environment where you’re going to be practicing. And possibly your skill level if you have played drums before. Beginner sets are usually affordable and include everything you need to get started. Once you’ve got your equipment, then it’s time to start practicing. You can find a drum teacher or take lessons from a drumming book.

But be patient, there’s no rush so don’t expect to be a pro overnight. Having said that, you can be playing your first drum beats in a very short time.

Let’s take a step backward and answer some basic questions to find out more about what you want to achieve as a drummer.

How To Get Into Drumming – Your First Steps!

Before you go out and buy yourself a drum kit, it’s important to ask yourself a few questions. And to find out more about the path you want to take as a drummer.

 

You can start with these simple questions and write down your answers to them. You can then keep them for future reference.

  1. What type of drumming do you want to get into? – You may choose acoustic, electric, or a mixture of both. Electronic and acoustic drumming. Or a specific percussion instrument if you don’t want to play the drum kit.
  2. What type of music do you want to play – rock, jazz, blues, country, fusion, metal, reggae, etc.?
  3. Are you aspiring to be a session drummer, performing live in bands or orchestras? Or do you simply seek the joy of playing drums for fun and personal enjoyment? Define your drumming aspirations and goals?
  4. If you could get anywhere as a drummer, where would it be? Put another way, how good do you want to be?
  5. How much practice are you willing to do?
  6. How much practice do you estimate you will need to do each day/week/month? You will need to know this to achieve the goal you have set yourself as a drummer.
  7. What is your budget for a drum kit stick and cymbals etc?
  8. Which drums do you think are best for your budget and playing goals? – Acoustic or electronic drumsets, hand percussion, etc.?
  9. Have you considered the accessories you will need to start drumming? – drum kit, cymbals, hardware and stands, sticks, beaters, cases, bags, etc.?
  10. Who are some famous drummers that you would like to be like?

Once you have a clearer picture of what exactly you want to achieve from drumming. Then, of course, you can begin to develop your skills.

The book I recommended earlier takes you through 6 lessons to begin building your skills. It does that in the rock drumming style. But understand, before, I mentioned rock drumming as being a style of music. Here I am referring to a style of drumming. Rock drumming is the foundation of all drumming, along with jazz drumming. These two styles are one style (or integrated drumming in general). However, distinguishing between the two styles through division aids in the initial phases of drumming growth and skill development. This is the first step in the process of how to get into drumming. As the beginner starts to learn the basics of rock and jazz drumming, then rudiments become the next step.

One that includes the basics: a bass drum, snare drum, tom-toms, hi-hat cymbals, and a ride cymbal. Plus one or two crash cymbals.
